The Town of Chester-le-Street, located in Durham, England, is the home to an incredible piece of historical architecture known as the "Anker's House". This structure, which is now a museum, was once the residence of a group of dedicated monks. What makes this dwelling unique is its age. The Anker's House, made of stone, is thought to date back to the 14th century, and is possibly one of the oldest surviving anchorite cells in the United Kingdom. The term 'anchorite' was given to religious recluses, who chose to withdraw from society to lead an intensely prayer-oriented, ascetic, andtypicallylonely lifestyle. Visitors to the Anker's House Museum can immerse themselves in the history of these solitary monks and get a glimpse into their austere way of life.
