The Town of Hedge End in Hampshire, England, holds an intriguing history linked with the strawberry farming industry. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the town was renowned as a significant hub of strawberry cultivation. During the strawberry-picking season, a special train service called the 'Strawberry Special' was introduced to transport thousands of baskets of strawberries from Hedge End to Covent Garden Market in London. This seasonal train service was an economic lifeline for the town, and the legacy of this flourishing industry can still be seen today in the form of the annual 'Hedge End Carnival', which was originally a strawberry fair to celebrate the end of the picking season.

Fun Fact !
Notwithstanding its agricultural past, Hedge End has evolved into a modern town with a distinctive architectural feature: the 'Berrywood Hospital'. Built in the early 20th century as a response to the Mental Deficiency Act 1913, the hospital originally served as an institution for individuals with learning disabilities. Designed by Martin S. Briggs, a renowned architect of the era, the building is an excellent example of the Queen Anne Style of architecture. It is now a residential area known as 'Dowds Farm', but the original hospital building still stands as a testament to the town's compassionate history and architectural heritage.
