The town of Ottery St Mary, nestled in the picturesque county of Devon, England, is notably renowned for its annual 'Tar Barrels' event. This tradition, dating back to the 17th century, involves locals carrying flaming tar barrels through the town's streets on Guy Fawkes Night, 5th November. The barrels are soaked in tar for several days before being set alight and hoisted onto the shoulders of willing participants. It is believed that the event originated as a pagan ritual to cleanse the town of evil spirits, and continues today, attracting thousands of spectators from around the globe each year.
