Did you know ?
Did you know that Ramsey was one of the few places in the country to have a fully operational monastery, the Ramsey Abbey, long before the Norman Conquest in 1066? The Ramsey Abbey was founded in 969 AD and was one of the most wealthy monasteries in England. It housed several incredibly important works of literature and historical documents, including the 'Ramsey Psalter' or 'Psalter of Oswald', one of the finest examples of 10th-century illuminated manuscripts. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries by Henry VIII, the Abbey fell into disrepair, but parts of the structure were incorporated into the Abbey House, which still stands today, representing a powerful symbol of the town's rich early-medieval history.

Fun Fact !
Yet, there is another lesser-known aspect of Ramsey's history. It is the birthplace of a unique geographical feature known as the 'Ramsey Island', which is not an island in the traditional sense. It is a 'fen-island', meaning an area of higher ground surrounded by fenland, a type of wetland. In the medieval period, the 'fenland' around Ramsey was drained for agriculture, creating a distinctive landscape where the town appears to rise from the flat fenlands like an island. Today, the fenlands around Ramsey are rich in biodiversity, hosting a variety of bird species and providing an ideal habitat for many rare insects and plants, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts.
Wikipedia Says
Ramsey is a market town and civil parish in the Huntingdonshire district of Cambridgeshire, England. The town is about 9 miles (14 km) north of Huntingdon. Ramsey parish includes the settlements of Ramsey Forty Foot, Ramsey Heights, Ramsey Mereside, Ramsey Hollow and Ramsey St Mary's. The town grew up around Ramsey Abbey, an important Benedictine monastery. In the order of precedence for abbots in Parliament, Ramsey was third after Glastonbury and St Albans. The town manor is built on the site of (and using materials from) the ancient Abbey and is the seat of the Lords de Ramsey, major landowners in Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. The remains of the Abbey are now home to part of the town's secondary school. Abbey College, Ramsey resulted from the amalgamation of the previous two secondary schools, Ailwyn School and Ramsey Abbey School.
