Did you know ?
The Town of Rugeley, nestled in the heart of Staffordshire, England, holds a rich industrial history, particularly tied to the coal mining industry. An intriguing fact is that it was home to Lea Hall Colliery, one of the most modern and productive mines in Europe during the mid-20th century. The mine, inaugurated on 16 February 1960 by the Duke of Edinburgh, was hailed as the first fully mechanised mine in Britain. It boasted an advanced underground railway system, automatic conveyor belts, and even underground canteens for the miners. Despite its initial success, the mine closed in 1991 due to economic pressures, leaving a significant imprint on Rugeley's industrial heritage.
