Another lesser-known yet fascinating aspect of Spalding is its historical connection to the drainage of the Fens, a natural marshy region. The town played a pivotal role in the 17th-century Fenland reclamation project, led by the Adventurers' Land Act of 1663. This monumental effort was spearheaded by Sir Cornelius Vermuyden, a Dutch engineer, who devised an intricate system of drains and rivers to counteract the region's persistent flooding. As a result, Spalding became home to one of England's earliest examples of large-scale land drainage. This project vastly changed the local landscape, transforming it into the arable farmland seen today. This achievement is commemorated by the Welland and Deepings Internal Drainage Board, which maintains the waterways and ensures the area remains flood-free.

Spalding () is a market town on the River Welland in the South Holland district of Lincolnshire, England. The town had a population of 34,113 at the 2017 census. The town is the administrative centre of the South Holland District. The town is located between the cities of Peterborough and Lincoln, as well as the towns of Bourne, Market Deeping, March, Boston, Wisbech, Holbeach and Sleaford. The town was well known for the annual Spalding Flower Parade, held from 1959 to 2013. The parade celebrated the region's vast tulip production and the cultural links between the Fens and the landscape and people of South Holland. At one time, it attracted crowds of more than 100,000. Since 2002 the town has held an annual pumpkin festival in October. In 2023 a new flower parade was organised by former councillor Steve Timewell.
